Submarine Solutions

Ambitious people in all professions are helping design and build nuclear submarines, contribute to the UK's future carrier programme and lend expertise to civil nuclear power projects.

"Design and construction of the Astute Class is the most challenging engineering project in the UK and has been described as more complex than the space shuttle." - Commodore Steve Lloyd RN, DE&S Director Production Submarines

What we do

Welcome to the home of the UK's most extensive submarine and warship design capabilities.

We're spread over three sites: the shipyard at Barrow in Furness, designated as a submarine centre of excellence; the Astute team and Swiftsure/Trafalgar class update teams at Farnborough and Weymouth; and the Astute and Swiftsure /Trafalgar class integration facilities at Ash Vale.

In addition to being the only designer and builder of UK nuclear submarines, we're also contributing to the UK's future aircraft carrier programme and applying our expertise to civil nuclear power generation opportunities.

Astute

When the Astute class enter service, they'll be the largest and most powerful attack submarine ever built for the Royal Navy.

Until then, it remains the UK's most demanding engineering project.

One of the most interesting features of the Astute class is the way that they're built. Advancements in modular construction have changed its whole design philosophy has changed. As a result, the Astute Class design is some 600 tonnes heavier than first planned.

Future aircraft carrier

How big is your thinking? The future Aircraft Carriers for the Royal Navy, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, will be the largest and most powerful surface warships ever built in the UK - around three times longer than Invincible class carriers (that's around 65, 000 tonnes.)

That's enough room for 1, 200 men and women, including 600 aircrew.

Key facts

  • 4,100 people in 9 locations across the UK
  • Only UK builder of nuclear submarines
  • 856 vessels have been built at the Barrow Shipyard, 373 merchant/commercial ships and 483 naval vessels

Working with us

We're looking for ambitious, capable professionals who can partner our stakeholders to deliver exceptional submarines, ships and civil nuclear elements, on time and to budget.

We're currently engaged in building seven Astute Class attack submarines, contributing to the Future Carrier programme, and applying our expertise to civil nuclear power opportunities.
