Submarine Solutions is not only renowned for producing world class engineering products. As the area’s largest private sector employer, it is also known for its commitment to improving the community in which it operates.

The Corporate Responsibility team's efforts are channelled into supporting the ongoing regeneration of Barrow-in-Furness. Activities range from charity work and sponsorship, to lending expertise and support to schools and colleges.

Education is the priority for 2009 and the team is actively engaged in several programmes and initiatives, from placing ambassadors in schools and colleges, to supporting renovation and improvements of facilities. The ultimate goal is to help raise the standards of education in the area, with a specific focus on science, technology, engineering and maths. Today’s students could well be tomorrow’s engineers, so sustaining a skilled workforce with the offer of a rewarding career is key to the business.

Examples of Corporate Responsibility in schools and colleges, include:

• £50,000 sponsorship of a science academy at Chetwynde School for use by all schools in the area.

• Close to 60 employees on the governing bodies of almost all of the schools in Barrow and its surrounding areas.

• More than 60 ambassadors of apprentice and graduate level in schools and colleges to help children of all ages with science, technology, engineering and maths subjects in partnership with Cumbria Stem Centre.

• Liaising with schools and colleges to promote the career opportunities available at BAE Systems Submarine Solutions.

• Providing work placements in the business for students and pupils.

• Offering careers advice, and providing guest speakers to visit schools and colleges.

• Working together with local schools to implement eco projects such as the building of allotment plots at Yarlside School.
