Its main base is the shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, which is a designated submarine centre of excellence. It also has an Astute team, and Swiftsure and Trafalgar class update teams at Farnborough and Weymouth, as well as the Astute, and Swiftsure and Trafalgar class integration facilities at Ash Vale.
Astute class submarine
Submarine Solutions is the prime contractor for the Astute class of nuclear powered attack submarines, responsible for the design, build and initial in-service support of four Astutes.
The first of class Astute is currently undergoing the final phase of test and commissioning, while boats two, three and four - Ambush, Artful and Audacious - are under various stages of construction. When the Astute class enters service, they will be the largest and most powerful nuclear attack submarines ever built for the Royal Navy.
