BAE Systems Environmental was commissioned by a leading nuclear decommissioning company to design and undertake explosives safety management during the decommissioning of a former UK WWII nuclear and explosives testing and experimental facility. The works involved the decontamination and decommissioning of buildings and plant formerly used for small scale nuclear testing.

BAE Systems Environmental advised upon and provided explosives analytical services as part of the customer’s initial assessment programme. We provided the customer with a comprehensive audit programme to ensure all works methodologies were checked and corrected to account for the potential presence of explosives residues and ordnance components.

We also provided input into the customer’s health and safety plan to ensure energetic materials and components were properly accounted for in the decommissioning process. BAE Systems Environmental was commissioned further to provide a day-to-day site supervisory role to ensure all works were conducted in accordance with the health and safety plan and audited methodologies. On completion and following satisfactory confirmatory analysis BAE Systems Environmental provided certification that the works were free from explosives contamination.

Working with the same client, BAE Systems Environmental has been able to offer other services including the sampling and analysis for explosives in buildings and drainage systems. We are able to analyse for explosives in solvent swabs as well as the more conventional soil, water and sludge samples.
