Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Project
Shipbuilding
BAE Systems Australia is Australia's leading shipbuilder with major shipyards at Williamstown in Victoria and Henderson in Western Australia. The last two of the Royal Australian Navy's FFG Class Frigates were built in our Williamstown yard as were the ten FFH Class frigates under the highly successful ANZAC Ship Program for which we were the prime contractor with overall program delivery responsibility.
Major ship conversion programs are also a speciality with the recent conversion of a commercial tanker into an Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) vessel for the RAN. We are the prime contractor for the Royal Australian Navy's Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) program that will deliver two 27,000 tonne amphibious ships based on the Spanish Navantia BPE Class.
Weapon Systems
BAE Systems Australia is an industry leader in the design, development, integration, assembly and support of ship air defence systems and guided weapons. We are the prime contractor for the Nulka off-board active missile decoy system which is currently in service with the navies of Australia, the United States and Canada. As part of the international Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) consortium we provide design and development of the guidance and control segments, missile segment production and integration support.
Our Ship Air Defence Model, which is in use around the world, provides high fidelity simulation and modeling that enables the effectiveness of naval combat systems in the air warfare environment to be evaluated. We also provide software and operational support to the Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) in use by the Royal Australian Air Force.
Through Life Support
BAE Systems Australia offers comprehensive through life support services for marine and naval ships and systems. We provide Integrated Materiel Support (IMS) for the RAN's FFH Class frigates under the ANZAC Alliance and are the prime IMS contractor for the FFG Class frigates. We are also the prime contractor for the in-service support of the RAN's amphibious Landing Craft Heavy (LCH), the hydrographic survey vessels and motor launches and the Pacific Patrol Boats.
As part of our through life support services, we also undertake repair, refit and maintenance for naval and commercial vessels, which range from scheduled maintenance to major availabilities and upgrades. Under the ANZAC Ship Alliance we are responsible for upgrading the platform for the Anti Ship Missile Defence (ASMD) program. We also provide an extensive range of deeper level maintenance for naval weapon and communication systems, communication system design and installation and set-to-work services.
Systems Engineering, Design and Integration
BAE Systems Australia's maritime business is underpinned by its wide range of systems engineering, design and integration services, supporting platform design, sensor, weapon and communication systems and whole-of-ship integration. From concept development through systems engineering to detailed design our skills in naval architecture, marine mechanical, electrical and structural engineering, combat system and communications integration are available to deliver whole of maritime capability solutions.
Our engineering is conducted under a framework that is ISO 9001 and CMMi Level 3 accredited, and is consistent with Navy technical regulatory requirements. Under the ANZAC Ship Alliance we are responsible for the platform systems integration and design modifications for the Anti Ship Missile Defence program. For the Landing Helicopter Dock program, we are responsible for the system engineering management of the total program as well as for the design of the top deck communications and sensor layout.
